The Power of PR TikTok

By: Alexia Barajas

TikTok is a current platform many use to follow and learn more about the world around them. This platform explores humor, horror, romance, books, games, the list goes on and on. My experience with TikTok relies mostly on news, humor, and self care tips. That was until I realized how TikTok could do so much for my professional career as well.

In my time exploring the app, my FYP, or better known as “for you page,” displayed several sixty-second clips that included not only amusing background sounds but graphics posted by my favorite influencers. It wasn’t until the first Public Relations artist popped up on my page that I began to ponder over how beneficial TikTok could be. In addition, how could it serve as a powerful tool within the industries of marketing, communications, and self promotion?

From a young age, I always found myself driven to connect with those around me in innovative ways in hopes of skipping the small talk or awkward stage. I prefer to create a natural conversation and a safe space when enhancing my personal and professional networks. As the Director of Special Events for CSUN PRSSA, I want to bring that same determination in making new connections and apply them to this role. I am eager to search for PR professionals within various fields, whether it be music, agency, entertainment, etc. My hope is to invite them to speak and share their advice with our members.

Then enters the power of PR TikTok,  I can recall scrolling through the app when suddenly I saw the hashtag “#pr” pop up on my screen. Curious to see what I would find, I discovered an upcoming succession of PR professionals.

One that caught my attention had vibrant colors in their video

Meg Treat, an accredited Public Relations professional with her own firm, TREAT Public Relations, arises on my page. This intrigued me so much, I followed her on all of the platforms I could and decided to contact her through Linkedin mentioning my interest in her TikTok page. The waiting game was not long since the connection through TikTok and Linkedin. It turned out Meg was ecstatic to share insightful advice to our eager members!

The power of PR TikTok came through and Meg shared invaluable advice for our members at our Professional Branding & Entrepreneurship Panel! I just can’t wait to see what next speaker I can find next!

Stay tuned… and while you’re at it, feel free to follow @megtreat on TikTok!
