Different Public Relations Job Titles

By: Marzhela Marroquin

As a soon to be graduating PR student from CSUN, I stepped into this major three years

ago thinking that PR was a small part of the industry. Clearly, I didn’t do enough research. I

didn’t know that there was so much more that goes into Public Relations. I’m sure that this has

been said many times before, but now I like to think of Public Relations as a tree and its many

titles as its branches. Are you curious to know some of the many PR titles that there are? Here

are few I discovered online that may spark your interest.

Are you currently working a job with any of these titles: Editor, Copywriter or Social

Media Manager? Well, it looks like you fall under the general title of the Public Relations

industry. If you didn’t know already, your job fits perfectly in the role of a Public Relations

specialist. Though they may be classified as a general title, they are an essential role in a Public

Relations agency.

As there are general titles in the Public Relations world, there are also many technical

titles like Director of Communications or the Media and Communications Manager in the

Communications field. These roles are in charge of taking care of the client’s public image

throughout all forms of social media and press releases. As a current E-Board member at CSUN

PRSSA, my role as one of the Chapter Administrator Coordinators in the Communications team

requires me to create social media posts for all important Chapter events. Whether its a graphic

to announce a new guest speaker at our weekly meetings, or a quick mental health check-in post,

our team’s priority is to maintain a strong and professional connection between the public and

CSUN PRSSA. We also have Marketing titles like the Social Media Marketing Coordinator

and the Marketing Communications Director, all of which use an extra amount of creativity to

create promotional content and products for their clients.

While I have full intentions of going into the entertainment industry as a PR specialist,

learning about several different titles within Public Relations was really eye opening and has

made me consider what I would like to do in that specific field. If you’re interested in working in

the PR industry, be sure to check out this site which breaks down several more titles and has

personally helped me understand how big the PR world actually is. You may be surprised and

find a role that fits your specific interest!
