3 PR jobs you can get in the sports industry

By: Nathan Porlucas

Event Marketing

If you enjoy working behind the scenes, this job is perfect for you! Professionals who work in event marketing usually work for basketball arenas, baseball stadiums, sports complexes, and many more professional sports facilities and arenas. Their responsibilities include advertising and promoting upcoming events and promotions. You might have heard of some of these special promotions such as dollar night, receiving a mini baseball bat when you attend the game, and more!

Sports Agent

Interested in interacting and managing professional sports players? Say less, because becoming a sports agent is a great fit for you. A sports agent is someone who looks out for the best interests of their clients. Sports agents usually work with professional athletes, but also work with college athletes who are trying to make the transition to play professionally. They help sign contracts with teams to ensure they are being taken care of, working out sponsorships, and even can sometimes travel with the client. Typically, the agent receives 10% or more of what their client makes on a deal or every year.

Public Relations Rep

Working as a Public Relations Rep is a great option for studying the fields of sports, communications, and public relations. Their responsibility is to ensure that their client maintains a good and strong reputation. Ensuring their clients hold their reputation, they follow any sort of breaking news, keep an eye for any potential problems or issues, and search the internet for any references to their client. PR Reps also work with newspapers and other news outlets to help release any important information about their client, such as signing with a new team where they also write press releases for.

What Do I Want to Pursue?:

Becoming a sports agent is something that has interested me for a very long time, specifically in the NBA. I have been a basketball fan for my entire life and I have seen some players sign questionable deals in their careers. As a sports agent, I want to be able to take care of these players and make sure these players are receiving the best and what they deserve. In addition, I want to be able to get the names of these players out in the world whether it be exercising sponsorships or even assisting those athletes who are trying to make that transition to play professionally. Helping others is something I love to do, and there is nothing better than working with one of the largest sports organizations in the world that I have admired my whole life.
